Hi all,
I am looking at an IBM Thinkpad for a work colleague, apparently the other day the DVD-ROM drive worked fine and could read CDs, now it can't. The drive spins up and makes some 'grunting' sounds then Windows gives an error: "Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format this is not compatible with Windows."

The drive is a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-C2512, I've Googled and found several other people with the same problem but don't seem to be able to find a solution.

I've used System Restore to roll back to two weeks ago before the problem but this hasn't helped. I have tried several CDs, ruling out the disc and I am told that the drive WAS working OK until some software or other was installed.

Can anyone help?

Firstly its IBM so destroy it quickly and buy HP.

Secondly it sounds like a hardware problem, if you havent already done so try and different DVD in the drive.

Thridly System restore wont help...

It's an audio CD in there at the moment, and I've tried several data CDs - none of which work.

I'm trying to find some Toshiba drivers as I'm sure it's to do with the Microsoft drivers its using at the moment. These were probably installed as part of a Windows Update which is probably what this 'software installation' was.

If a driver update fails, i would get onto IBM to check the warrenty on the laptop if its out of date youll either need to order a new one or buy an external drive.

i'm getting this same error message now, whilst trying to install Command and Conquer 3. I've tried two different install DVDs, both legit purchased from Game, and both have been installed on machines at the office. neither have worked in either my trusty 5 year old Pioneer dvd rom drive, or the brand new liteon fancy dvd rewriter i purchased today on the mistaken belief that said trusty old pioneer dvd rom drive was dead. i've played a regular dvd movie in the liteon new drive, so the drive is fine, it's just this CNC3 DVD. I've read that EA have some stupid anti-everything 'technology' which stops the disk being read if it detects daemon tools, but i've uninstalled that and it still gives the same error.

anyone shed any light or offer suggestions?

thanks

ok, this is fixed now, my apologies. uninstalling nero allowed it to be read... trip hawkins moves to the top of my decking list.
