OK, this is a silly question but here goes. Having Spybot installed as well as Kaspersky I don't have the need for Windows Defender which, anyway, isn't that great. Can I remove or disable it since it insists of updating every so often and isn't needed?

I have looked around the system but can't see where I would do this. Thanks for any help.

very simple mate:

open Windows Defender
click Tools
click General Settings
scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
after you uncheck this, click on the Save button
close Windows Defender

There's also/alternatively an option right at the bottom of the options page that says "Use Windows Defender". Untick that and it turns off Defender completely. Probably the best method of doing it.
