Windows - Delayed Write Failed

These seem to be the bane of a lot of people's lives given the number of reports of them around the 'net, but I've not found any definitive resource on likely causes. I've been getting them since I did a clean install of Windows XP with SP2 on Monday (I was previously using SP1 and it wasn't broke so I didn't fix it).

I've applied the latest motherboard driver updates from Intel, applied a related hotfix from Microsoft, tested across multiple devices (HDDs and pen drives) and multiple ports, and still the error persists. I don't have any performance tweaks that commonly cause them applied, but I do have an ATI AGP card, which also seems to be a common cause.

Motherboard is Asus P4P800 (yup, nearly four years old, but again, if it ain't broke...) :)

I do have a spare USB 2.0 card I could install, but I'd rather eliminate other possible causes first.

Any ideas?

Spare USB 2.0 card has gone in and been successfully tested as I need this working.

Still want to solve the problem though.

I get this error if I unplug my usb flash drive when it's still accessing the drive, I use the safely remove hardware icon before unplugging my usb drive. Started getting the delayed write failed error a lot recently and then my flash drive died, not totaly but writing to it now I get errors so I now have a Corsair Flash Voyager GT 8GB from overclockers. Oh how I miss my old, slow 1Gb flash drive. NOT! :D

Thinking about it, I did have the odd error even with SP1, just not very often, so maybe it's a motherboard thing (I've seen other reports relating to the P4P800 series, so that wouldn't surprise me).

Anyway, PCI card hasn't triggered any errors yet, touch wood. :)

Always, unless I have a good reason to do otherwise (e.g. when I'm copying a few hundred thousand files around).

Could be BIOS as mine's old, but I'm reluctant to flash it as I've heard bad things about more recent BIOS updates for this board.

Anyway, no errors since the USB card. :)
