Windows Disk Defrag - Not Available...

Hey guys,

My mate has just sent me this –



He can’t remember when he last used disk defrag, so there’s no way he can think back

It’s a new one to me too, I thought it might be because he was using some third party software that was taking precedence, but thinking about it, I used to use both Windows disk defrag and the one built into Norton System Works okay?

So, any ideas of how you would restore it

stupid question but is defrag actually installed - you can uninstall it as a windows component - maybe he did that?

There's no reason why he would remove it; out of interest, how do you re-install it?

What I think is the DLL's required for the defrag tool have been un-registered.

Dont think you can actually un-install the windows defrag tool. You can disable it by un-registering the DLL's , but you actually remove it via the ADD/REMOVE windows components.

It's on the left "Add/Remove Windows Components" but there is no listing for Defrag in there.

do this..

start run
dfrg.msc


if it doesn't load then he doesn't have it!

there's a reg key for assigning that button to dfrg, because i've changed mine to oodefrag

i'm not sure what dll's it uses (if any) and can't check as i've removed it from my system

but to fix the grey box..

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\defragpath]

in there (compare yours to his)
