An option in error recovery should be to leave your applications and data alone. If not then you'll have to remove the disk and attach it to another PC to copy the data files.

If it is a SATA HDD then the plugs are the same for a normal 3.5inch SATA youd find in a PC. If it is a crappy IDE jobby, you will need an adapter.
EDIT: Alternatively you could grab a Linux live CD - such as Linux Mint - and copy your data from the drive to USB or over the network. A live CD runs off the CD and RAM - no data is written to hard disk, so is a totally safe way to read the contents of your HDD.![]()
