i just stuck another gig of ram in so its now 3 gig and my index score has dropped from 5.2 to 4.2

whats all that about then!
isnt it supposed to go up when you add more ram

the original 2 gigs was in slots 1 and 3 and i banged the other in slot 4

should i swap it to slot 2 to see if it makes any difference!

3 ram sticks will make it single channel.. thats why

4 slots = 2 channels.... u will need to use 2 or 4 of the ram slots to get it in dual channel

Assuming that you have 3 * 1gig it doesn't surprise me because whilst I think slots 1 and 3 will still act in dual channel, slot 4 won't.

if he uses all 4 slots it will act in dual channel, using 3 slots won't..

2gb geil cas 4 = 5.9
4gb geil cas 4 = 4.8

work that one out. they are in dual chanel mode and set to 800mhz so not clocked and at 4 - 4 - 4 - 12 (stock)

my system still kicks bottom but my other lowest score is my 74gb raptor at 5.5!

i have 2gb cas 5 ddr800 vista scores it 5.9... but thats because amd handle the memory bandwidth better then intel...

Are you 100% on this? It is just I remember the days of 3 ram slots and if you filled them 2 would still work in dual channel.
I appreciate slot 4 can't operated in dual channel but does it actually stop slots 1 and 3 doing so?

dual channel means 2 channels.. if i put 3 sticks in my MB it goes to single channel... it must be 2 or 4 ram sticks

yeh i was thinking that about dual channel but if i remember right

when ive seen some memory benchmarks the difference between dual and single channel was about 2%-5% performance wise but a drop on the windows index from 5.2 to 4.2 is a big jump prob about 18% ish
obviously thats not a good rule of thumb to go by though

so windows with more than 2gb is taking a performance hit then by all accounts!

my index score is 4.5

What do you need to run at 5.9

AMD sckt 939 4600 dual core x2
ATI Radeon x1900xt 512mb
2 gb ram samsung 4 x 512mb pc3200 ddr
Asus motherboard
IDE 200 gb Maxtor
IDE 250 Samsung
Hipper 580 Watt PSU

Just curious. thinking of upgrading bits in the computer but keeping same mobo and socket if posible.

Processor = QX6700 @ 3.6GHz
Memory = 4GB @ 377MHz 4-4-4-12
Graphics = 8800GTX (SLI but with crummy drivers one is disabled)
Primary Hard Disk = Raptor RAID

Could probably bump the RAM score up to 5.9 by dumping 2GB and clocking it up a bit.

As a method of measuring a PCs performance it doesn't seem to be upto much.

5.6 is about right for the RAM score because your running intel

if you mean your RAM score you will need ddr800 in dual channel mode. but your motherboard wont take ddr800 ram...
