The other day I got the following error message
Windows File Protection
Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files. Insert your product CD-ROM now.
and, assuming it was just a pop-up ad trying to get me to click OK to install some malware on my PC, closed it. It was only afterwards that I figured out that it's a genuine error message, so now I'm concerned that I have some corrupted system files on my system that might cause crashes.

Can I get Windows File Protection to check my system again so I can repair the files?

Is it possible that the files in question might've been replaced by legitimate software that I installed, like drivers, AVG, or something else? I've ran both a virus check, rootkit scan and SpybotS&D and I don't have any malware that could've done the replacements maliciously, so it's either data corruption or a deliberate replacement by a legit programme.

It's probably just realised that UXTheme.dll (very common for non-Microsoft certified visual styles) or something has changed. I don't think it actively scans for corrupt/missing files, but only when one a request is made for one to be read or written to.

I don't have any knowledge on that subject, so it's a total guess on my part mind.

If your OS behaves as normally, just ignore it. If it doesn't, then run SFC /scannow from the Run dialogue and it'll force a recheck.

Just ran it and almost immediately after beginning the scan it said "Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache. Insert your Windows Professional Service Pack 2 CD now."

Could this have been caused by WMP11, which I installed last week? I had WMP10 slipstreamed onto my install cd.
