Windows Home Server: Any updates?

but i'd have liked the option to create multiple partitions. i like to keep stuff separate but this gives you no choice. i'm not amused... :( :D

One of the underlying principles of WHS is that drives and letters don't exist. All drives are pooled into one storage area. If you have two or more physical devices then you can enable folder duplication which will duplicate a folder over two physical devices. Keeping stuff separate in different folders is the way to go.

well i've ditched the idea of installing it on my normal pc as i need my disk space as i want it. i can see where they're coming from - i just don't have enough hardware at the moment.... :p

anyhoo, i've installed it in virtual pc (it was giving me grief in my preferred vmware) and i have to say i'm very impressed with the backing up of a live system over the network. took just 3 minutes. and then i created a blank machine to restore to and again that just took 3 minutes. good stuff. i realise acronis/ghost does the same but i'm still impressed with how easy/quick it is. :)

anyone actually using this now?

Yes - celeron 1G, 500MB ram, Gigabit lan card, SATA card and two WD 500GB drives.

A few niggles (it is beta after all) but I'm happier with this than my previous experience with FreeNas, USB boxes and D-Link DNS-323 NAS.

you'll need a key also, so no point downloading it without.

Keys are also 1 time usage and tie'd to a user mate.

So dont waste your bandwidth downloading if your not in the beta.

I'm currently running this on Virtual PC 2007, however I'm looking to put this onto a 1.2GHz 1GB RAM, however although it's still only in the Beta stages I would like to get this computer setup and running it (obviously not as my main storage system) just so I can upload/download files away from home, but I have the nagging thought that it's only a Beta so what’s the point.

When testing comes to a close, if this is released in retail format will I simply be able to upgrade rather than having to go through a complete re-install. As by then I will have probably got all the required settings set and got used to all its features.

The "upgrade" from beta 2 to CTP basically formats the system partition & does a fresh install of WHS. So, whilst the data partition with all the shared folders is untouched, all the server settings and user accounts are lost.

I'd imagine going from CTP to retail would be the same.
