Windows Home Server

Hmmm...what disk controllers are you using? Did you reinstall?

I have seen this before where it was the controller drivers and not the disk itself (I've also seen it where it was the disk too!).

Obviously if it was a case transplant then it's unlikely to be the driver :(

Using intel controller drivers for my sata expansion card, and windows for the internal drives.

I'll monitor eventvwr over the next few days, as chkdsk seems happy with the drive now. And see if I can persuade the boss to allow me to purchase some drives..

I'm running WHS2011 as hyper-v guest on a HP Proliant Microserver N36L; 8gb ram, 4 x 1tb drives in raid 5
I'm using the servio media server add-in (free). I stream 720p (tv and projector are only 720p) movies across my network to my BD player (DNLA) without issue. Servio adds the metadata just fine so i see a nice picture of the movie in the library.
I also use WakeOnLan, AutoExit and Remote Launcher addins.

Quite happy with my setup.

Have been running WHS v1 for a while now without issue.

09/01/12 backup was fine, completed in 3hours 35mins.
Backups after then all fail. Seem to have narrowed it down to my 'c' drive.
Just did a backup with the remaining 4 drives and it went ok.
Just trying the 'c' drive and it takes all day to get to 9%

Other half's machine backs up without issue also.

Any ideas on what could cause this?
Have run chkdsk on the 'c' drive, not sure what else to look at.

Thanks :)

New gigabit switch solved the problem.

Must have been degrading slowly over a long period of time as things gradually got worse.

All back to normal now :)

Hmmm I can't access any of my shares, logged in as Administrator.

Out of interest - is that your system drive or just one of the others - I get regular 'unhealthy' flags on my system disk and they seem to come back to file errors rather than an actual disk problem - annoying to say the least, but touch wood not terminal (so far!)

Hi guys im new to all this.
I have done a fresh install(trial) until my disks arived ive ordered form here. and i have noticed a prob.

I have most prob done a silly thing im guessing, i have installed the os on a 3tb drive, and yup you guessed it 60gb for main os 2tb for storage and nearly 800 gb i cant do anything with. is this normal ? should i have installe dit on one of my smaller 300gb drives then used the 3 tb drive for sotrage ?.

Which brings me onto my next question.

I did used to run the older brother of this, but i have noticed a great differnce.

each hd i add is treated as a seperate hd rather than the original it was all treated as one big storage pool ? can i connect my external mp3 hd to the server without formatting it, and will i be able to still add files to it, i bought it on purpose its a 3tb usb drive.

If i need to install motherboard drivers what should i be looking for, windows 7 64 bit windows 8 ect.

thank you for the help peeps

looks like i will have to reformat tomorrow when my windows home server 2011 disks arive, i cannot get back that 700gb of unused space back from my 3tb drive.

I think i will have to install it iteinaly on my 300gb drive then add the 3tb and other drives.

AS a matter of interest, can i leave my external 3tb usb drive as it is and jsut plug it into my server. without having to add it ? i woudl hate to copy accross again just under 2tb of mps.

Cheers for the help

Anyone use WHSv2011 as a DC? I know its against the EULA and don't really want to discuss that.

Experiences with and problems found would be good. I know that disk speed will crawl.

I do use WHSv1 to back up Win7 64 bit and have used it to recover from a corrupted OS Win 7 Sp1 64 bit. Making a back up takes 20 mins - rinstalling a backup took hours...

I just wondered if the WHSv1 connector worked in win 8.1 ? Didn't want to try - and corrupt something.

Thanks, Mel

Looking on Microsoft communities it looks like backing up 8.1 is problematic. Also didn't realise but WHS(any vintage) is now dead! I won't be able to reinstall WHSv1 as the MS site is wiped of all updates / power packs etc. Perhaps it's time to retire it (in a year or so!)

Was messing about with WHS v1 over Christmas and I'm pretty sure that the updates were still available via the auto-update function

Windows Communities say WHSv1 support was discontinued in June 2013 and said all suuport files removed from MS Site - can only reinstall with original disc!

Somebody was complaining he could not update a reinstalled WHSv1 - I haven't tried myself.
