windows live messenger on win 7,

just downloaded this onto my pc, windows 7,

tried it about 6 months back couldnt get it to work, gave up,

tried today, downloaded and still after putting username and password in (which i know is correct as checked my emails on hotmail web site)

it still wont open, start etc.

says we cant sign you into windows live messneger, signing into windows live messenger failed because the service is temporary unavailable. Please try again later.
this is what it said some months back. I have it on my blackberry and just signed in on there and all is fine.

error code : 81000494

any one able to offer any advice ?

I have been getting this since monday also.

It tries to sign in but refuses to with that code & then sends my cpu usage through the roof until i kill everything to do with it.

I've since moved over to pidgin which runs lovely I must say.

are you using the latest Windows Live Messenger?
There are some compatibility issues on Windows 7 with older WLM Services.

I use Windows Live Messenger 2011 (15.4.3508) on Windows 7 and Windows VISTA and they work fine.

I know a lot of people don't like the new version, but atleast it works.

I presume it is the lastest version? i downloaded today from microsoft windows messenger site.

If you say yours works, can you link me to it, in case it is different, I dont use msn live messenger that much, but nice to be able to use it now and then

This is Windows Live Essentials, It includes WLM 2011 and other stuff, it's the one I use, and works no problem.
I'd reccomend installing all of the essentials related to messenger, Just to be on the safe side...

Had a look to make sure your firewall hasn't blocked it? (that's if you use one)

i use whatever firewall is on win7, i did a test thing through msn and it all came up ok,

only thing is like Emphacy mentioned, I only installed messanger from within Windows live essential, wonder if that had anything to do with it ?

nope i just installed messanger from windows live essentials, i had problems initially because windows live signon from a previous version was causing issues, spent a fair while hunting round the net to find out how to sort it, ended up with registry changes, wasn't pretty.

every release they put out seems to get worse
