Since yesterday my Windows Vista computer keeping locking itself by going to the logon screen, and requesting a password. It does this after 10 or so minutes of idleness.

Now, I have not changed any settings, screensaver is turned off, and power settings are as they were before.

What could be the problem?

Vista !

Try creating another account as a tester and logon to that and see if the problem happens again. If not then it def is something to do with your account settings.

I rather that not do that... from my past experience I found that adding and removing users just clogged up the OS and slowed it down, so I never did that with my own machine.

The thing is, none of my system settings have changed... so why has it just started doing this?

Your past experience is an anomalous result. There is no reason adding or removing users would slow down a machine (and I do that stuff a lot ;)

GRR!

The problem had randomly stopped, and I hadn't restarted for 11 days, so I decided to do so today.

The thing has started again and it is really winding me up now!

For some reason the Windows default settings aren't saving either... every time I open Firefox and Outlook, they ask me that they aren't the default applications

I assume - no insult intended - that you have virus scanned your machine?
When an "out of the blue" problem starts a deep scan is always a good idea.
