Windows Locking Up

I thought I had this narrowed down, but it seems I didn't. At first I thought Steam was causing Windows to lock up but it isn't that, because when I was typing this out originally without Steam running, it locked up lol.

Anyways, I built a new comp about 2 weeks ago, spec will be below, and in the past few days it started locking up. I'm not sure why, I'm not really that much of a wizard when it comes to problems, that's why I'm here. I've Googled and had a look around but to no avail. Steam definitely increases the problem, but it seems to do it at random as well. Basically, if Steam comes on, the computer locks up, can't do anything and no cursor. But it seems that it will do it with just general basic use as well.

OS - Windows 7
CPU - i5 3570k, at standard 3.4ghz
RAM - 8GB 1600mhz
SSD - Samsung 830 128gb
GPU - 7850 2048mb
MoB - Asrock Z77 Extreme4-M

I've updated all my drivers etc but it's not done anything, just really confused now as to what it could be. Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers guys.

Just ran Memtest for over 2 hours, no errors found. So I'm really stumped as to what it could be now, although it hasn't crashed in that 2 hours. So I really have no idea what it could be.

Edit: Just looked in my device manager, I have a USB that's got a yellow exclamation mark next to it but also an unknown device, all the information I have is ACPI\INT33A0. Any ideas on that? I believe it's something to do with Intel Rapid Smart or some such from a quick google. But I have no idea what that means and if it could be causing my problems?

Edit 2: Now there's no yellow exclamation marks, seems to be running better at the moment. Hopefully no more problems :p

Do you get BSOD's? id Windows set to NOT automatically restart?
d/l who crashed: that will give you info from the mini dumps.
Have you looked @ event viewer? Click start button & type name in search box.
You don't need Intel Rapid Smart with an SSD unless the OS is on an HDD.
Have you turned off defragmenter.
With MemTest you need at least 5 complete runs. I doubt 2 hrs is enough so run overnight.
I doubt usb is at fault.
Have you latest chipset drivers from Asrock site. Check for new BIOS

Hi mate, cheers for the response, it's running fine now, one of my drivers wasn't the newest one after bit of Googling and after updating that (Amongst a few other things) it seems to be running fine, so not exactly sure what it was but it was definitely something to do with drivers.

Cheers.

Okay, so after having no problems at all, it seems it's back. Event viewer has power errors because of the the shut downs, but there's also errors coming up as WMI, with this in the little box.

Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

I'm pretty sure this is my problem. I've found that this could be an ATI driver problem? Hope I can sort it.

Edit: Found a fix on Microsoft's website for this problem. I'm hoping it'll be fine now. But I may be back. Cheers again Pilgrim for the ideas.

Edit 2: As I thought, it locked up again while downloading the Windows Updates, no idea what it is now... Again.

Try a clean install of your graphics driver just to rule that out.
Did you run Memtest?

What about your PSU? How old? Does it have enough watts? After 3-5 years you'll lose 20% output. Check the connections.

I having problems with my nVidia card which I think is borked.:(

Hi chaps, ran memtest everything was fine, did a clean install of graphics drivers, nothing there either. PSU is brand new as is everything in the comp, and no overheating at all.

After a lot of googling I found that it's a problems with Windows 7 not installing something properly or something like that, I've done a clean install of Windows with all the drivers etc, and it seems to be running well now. So hopefully my problems will go away.

Cheers again for the help guys.
