Windows Media Centre Edition 2005

hello everybody, i never trust anybody who rants on, shouts and calls things pos etc.

I own a copy of mce2005 and i find it outstanding, over the past year or so i have tried evryfreeware pvr software i could find and none worked for me, as for mce being a resource hog, give me a break, i play fs2004 a lot and on a long flight i leave it running in thebackground.
Now while its flying, i watch a tv prog, record another and surf the internet, sometimes i forget fs is running at all.

I will check out mp, but i tried it before and it was well screwed up.

By the way i've also paid for and used showshifter which i like, but its not as good as mce.

here comes the sarcasm .... ready ....go
i love mce i hate everything else, repeat over and over again insert forum acceptable expletive blah blah.

Presumably none of you who **** it of have tried a pucca copy.
chow for now

Why I don't like MCE:

No mp4 support with Subs
Very poor codec support even with cole2k's coded pack (Many codecs simply don't work, with MP you can use MPlayer or VLC which are MILES better than naff old WMP10)
Ridiculous way of handling music, ie everything must first be added and then they are all grouped together (Useless if you have a server with 500Gb's+ of sensibly laid out Ogg's and musepack's)
Serious system resource/clock cycles hog ie Need expensive PC to get everything decoded properly and smoothly especially HD videos.

MythTV is nice but having played around with it for a few days I still went back to MP as it's imho the best! You do however need to spend a little bit of time tweaking and setting up MP so that it's 100% stable and does exactly what you want it too do but it's time well spent to be honest.

When you can get something for FREE that actually does the job far better than a product thats charging a significant amount of money for, then it's a bit of a no-brainer to me!!

Not sure I understand what you mean there - subs?

You're right on the latter point (for other, more subjective reasons), but I cant agree on the codec point. Video codecs will almost always be made to work with WMP, and being aimed at normal users they're normally padded in cotton wool to 'just work'. Never have any problem there.

You're suggesting that music be left ungrouped and unorganised? :/

It can be a resource hog (as we covered earlier), but to suggest that any resource issues would prevent HD content decoding is obsurd. If a PC isn't up to the job of decoding such content, then the presence of media center is irrelevant - it's just not going to do it.

Well then... you'd be using MythTV. Remember MCE is an Operating system - it's not an extra application that you buy off the shelf. You make the choice from day one, and if you want free then you want open source - with leaves you with Linux.

I use MCE, purely because no other Media Center will allow me to stream video to my XBOX360, which is the only reason I want a media center in the first place.

I gave Media Portal rc2 a go tonight and it seems to be working as well as MCE2005. Only a few crash to desktops with it this time, mainly related to it's remote control handling I think (I'm using the one from Hauppauge PVR-350). MCE2005 didn't want to know about the remote so at the moment I'll stick with Media Portal, just a shame about the crashes.

One other aspect is that I can't seem to stop videos/dvd's and return to Media Portal's home menu as it seems to lock up/timeout. I've tried switching the various decoder options but no help there.

I dont think most people have 500gig of music
I dont think most people could be bothered to spend a
bit of time tweaking and setting up mp

I am the proud owner of two pc's running mce, both using remotes and digital tv, neither needed any tweaking or setting up, they both work fine out of the box.
