Windows not booting properly after reinstallation

To cut a long story short, I had a perfectly normally functioning computer for the past 18 months until I suddenly couldn't access Origin - it stated I needed to be online. I was, so I checked for solutions. Nothing worked from reinstalling Origin to editing my internet settings.

After trying everything, I decided to back up all my files and reinstall windows 7, this time with a separate data partition.

I have dedicated 150Gb to the C-drive and about 1200Gb to the data partition.

Installation ran fine, and then I was hit with all the windows updates. The first batch installed fine, but after the second batch, the computer didn't get past the windows loading screen. There was just a black screen, which showed no signs of changing.

I opened windows in safe mode and restored it to before the updates, but once the updates installed again it was the same problem.

I reinstalled windows again and the same thing happened. This last time I decided to disconnect the internet and sort out my anti virus program and install the drivers. However, the end was still the same - boot up, windows loading, black screen, safe mode, system restore - back to square one.

Has anybody had such problems? It's rather frustrating, especially considering I had no big problems before...:(

If you've installed any graphics card drivers onto the PC I'd be tempted to remove them and allow Windows to install it's own - for now anyway. Unlikely that's the cause but it's worth a shot if you have.

When you get in safe mode are you able to have a read through the eventviewer for any issues?
start>run> eventvwr

You might be on to something there. It seems whenever I install windows updates (some of which update the graphics card) or restore/install the drivers I previously had, which came on the software CD for my GPU, I get this problem. How do I remove the graphics card drivers then?

N.B. I have the computer working to some extent. Avoiding downloading any windows updates and graphics drivers.

Edit: Have successfully installed all windows updates apart from one ("ATI Technologies Inc. - Display - AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series").

SOLVED: Turns out the confusion was caused by the fact that my TV was still connected via HDMI. I guess the computer assumed that was the default monitor and therefore there was a conflict within windows as to which monitor the primary monitor was. So far things are working normally so I guess this case is closed. I feel like such an idiot though going through all this hassle because of a connected TV...
