windows on a hard drive

can i put a hard drive out of my sis comp into mine and install windows onto it then put it back into her computer

Why not install it on her computer? I would do that anyway to avoid driver conflicts.

she got xp on it but it wont let me put windows 7 on it. would i be better formating it first

From XP to 7 you must do a fresh install. Back up all her files to an external harddrive/USB sticks/etc and then boot off from the Windows install disk. To do this you need to change the boot order to the optical drive in BIOS. This will format and install Windows 7 for you.

Yes you can. If that's the case then change the boot order to boot from the USB instead.
