Windows On SSD?

Hi Guys,

Noob question on its way to you.

I have Windows7 64bit OEM, and I am getting a SSD instead of the normal drive
that I currently have, the question is can I install this version of Windows on the
SSD without and problems?

Or

Will I have to make a clone of my current setup and then transfer it to my SSD
for it to work. If I have to clone the OS and transfer it then what will I need
to change when I have the OS on the SSD ?

probably easiest to do a fresh install on the new drive. give microsoft a ring and they'll reactivate/give you another code (never done it myself so unsure of the exact procedure).

if you have a retail version of windows you don't need to do any phoning you can re-install as many times as you want.

as for settings, there are a few tweaks you can do when using an SSD. this article is good: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-performance-tweak,2911.html

not sure if that article mentions, but you should disable defrag for the SSD as well as it doesn't speed things up, and results in unnecessary reads/writes which reduce SSD lifespan. i think windows 7 should disable that automatically though

Thanks very much m8, If I can ring Microsoft then I will do that, Always best to do a fresh
install I think, now just got to figure out how you update firmware on a SSD, as I have been
reading that its best to update the firmware before installing an OS onto the drive.

You can try activating Windows over the Internet.

If that doesn't work you can select the option to ring Microsoft.

You'll be given a whole string of numbers to enter on your phone and then a whole string of numbers to enter on your PC.

At some point during the call you'll be asked to confirm that your copy of Windows is only installed on 1 PC.
