Windows Phone 7 - Essential Apps!

I'd be interested to hear feedback on Rail Planner, I'm thinking of buying it as the mobile version of national rail is getting annoying having to input the same station in every day. Can you set up a daily journey that will allow you to see the next few trains leaving from one to another station that can be done offline (no signal)?

Its very good to be honest. Its a huge improvement over the Android version as it offer more functions oddly enough.

Yes, you can set-up a "my departures" page and you set-up all the all the trains which you want to catch. Once thats complete. It has its own tab with the train time tables on this also updates if the trains are delayed etc.. but needs a network or wifi connection.

The "Next Train Home" functionally is excellent, as within one touch it find the next train home.

If you have any more questions about it but its been very helpful for me. :D

Is anyone else using Spotify on their W7P, the app is just so useless and missing lots of the functionality it has on other phone os :(

The new update hasn't improved it either.

I did use Zune for a while, but on my desktop Spotify is much quicker to use and has a great song library, so when they released the mobile app i couldn't wait to use it, just such a shame it is terrible right now.

Thanks for that. :)

Just one last question, with the my departures page do you have to set up every train time or can you just say Kings cross to cambridge (for example) and it will show all trains from A-B on that day?

If you're looking fora REALLY good Youtube app/ interface ive just got Metro Tube, have the metro theme throughout and pretty much and full functionality as far as I can tell.

You set the train times for every train you want. However, there is a departures and journeys tabs. the journeys tab remembers what you have used before. :D

Agreed!

I have been using it for about a week now and its better than using the mobile version of you tube.

Bump. Dad wanted a smartphone so I decided for his usage, a Windows Phone would be best. Going to go for the Omnia 7 as he's not splashing out for a Lumia or anything too flagship. Having a look about for apps, I thought I'd add a few here:

Network Dashboard - lets you turn off wifi etc quickly
Weather Live - supposed to be one of the best weather apps
Avanade - train times

Yea got Network dashboard, handy really that it let you have a Start tile directly to the Wifi/ 3G on off swtich.

And yes got weather live too!

Some free Xbox games with 50G achievements for those that don't already know:

Sudoku
Minesweeper
Shuffle Party
Flowerz

They're not great (although I do enjoy Sudoku now and again) but they're free!

Apparently theirs a dedicated Skydrive app out from Windows that's supposed to be really good but I cant find it on the marketplace!?

Updated dad's phone to Mango without any issue, other than it taking about 2-3 hours.

Found a version of Network Dashboard that did the same thing but was free. Free ringtone and wallpaper apps are decent/useful enough.

Deleted Tube Map and Tube Companion as Bing - Get Me There does the same thing but better and has both rolled into one. Got XE Currency and Microsoft's conversion app as well (and Skydrive but doubt dad will use it).

Samsung's app that came with it that does the weather (via AccuWeather) is good enough not to bother changing - does local/hourly forecast/6 day forecast type thing.

All free so far, have to cough up for the train and traffic ones though, I think.

So far I've quite enjoyed playing with Windows Phone 7.5 (my dad keeps moaning it's his phone not mine lol), it's a nice UI tbh, fairly intuitive and consistent. However (quick list of dislikes):

Despite the screen being a bit bigger than my iPhone, I find the keyboard more fiddly/less forgiving to use. Also the AMOLED colours are unrealistic (over saturated), although the black level is very good, and it's not Retina-sharp up close, but the old man has old man eyesight and won't notice/care.

Use the 'back' button works well for app-switching and killing applications, but the reliance on it for just about everything else is a bit annoying and it isn't always obvious where you are in menus some of the time, you have to break away from the screen to press it, and it generally feels a bit hodge-podge.

Lots of wasted space/truncated text within the UI and some of the apps are poorly laid out/don't have the same clean feel as the OS. Haven't paid for an app yet so need to figure out how to set that up, although it'll probably be easy on the desktop via the Zune software.

Just hoping his phone (Omnia 7) gets the 8 update next year, as it feels like it's ever so slightly guilty of style over substance in a few areas. Lots of black as well lol.

They removed it?....if it already on the phone its safe though right?
Why the hell would they take that down!? Its the best of all Youtube Apps I have ever used, my only hope is that MS has bought it to use themselves!

Wow, so its all down to Google...the more they carry on the worse they seem to be, what.****s they are.

“Unfortunately, Google has refused to allow Microsoft’s new Windows Phones to access this YouTube metadata in the same way that Android phones and iPhones do. As a result, Microsoft’s YouTube “app” on Windows Phones is basically just a browser displaying YouTube’s mobile Web site, without the rich functionality offered on competing phones. Microsoft is ready to release a high quality YouTube app for Windows Phone. We just need permission to access YouTube in the way that other phones already do, permission Google has refused to provide.”

I have the *.xap file saved so I can load it back on my handset. :D

lol...well hopefully by the time I change again, Windows will have found a work around, imagine them having an agreement with Apple/iOS, but not MS!
