Windows remote control

Hi guys just wondering if there is a software that lets you use a TV remote or what ever to control windows, such play,stop media player and shut down PC?

i know you can buy a kit but wondering if you can do it with exiting things that one may have.

I got a IR adaptor, loads of TV,DVD and digibox controls.

I know you can get software for phones,PDA,PSP to control your TV,Vid,DVD,digibox

a lot of companies try but true UPNP support isnt that great thanks to MS doing their own thing with MEdia Ceneter and messing up everyone else in the process.
