windows remote desktop

Enable remote desktop on the machine you want to RDP to, to do this right click on my computer, properties, if its XP then the remote tab and enable it with the tickbox, if vista then there is a remote option on the left hand side.

go to the other machine, start, run MSTSC then put in the name/ip address of pc you want to connect to.

bobs your uncle.

now the machine that I will be using to rdp on will be my work laptop when I am away

how do i find my machine at home, will it be my external IP address as the machine at home is behind a router,

what happens if Sky change my IP on that machine whilst away

and what port is RDP working on for my router

Yes external IP address so you need to forward the correct port on your router

Set up something like dyndns or no-ip (google for them) if you have a dynamic IP address

RDP is port 3389
