Windows restarts after logging in

Omg. It's restarting as soon as I enter my password and press enter again.

I seriously have no idea what to do now. I've uninstalled the old/default drivers, booted in safe mode and installed the latest drivers and the problem is still there.

You said at the start that it's something to do with Aero & DX right? is there anything else I can do?

I honestly don't understand how something like this can randomly start happening.

Shall I install old drivers or what?

I can boot in safe mode and it works without any Nvidia drivers. But as soon as I install a graphics driver it restarts like before.

Ok well what do you suggest I do?

And no I don't think so, I do have steam and afterburner yeah and the only AV I run is Microsoft Security Essentials.

I loaded the default BIOS settings a while ago and I haven't encountered any problems with that either.

Right now I'm in "normal" windows and no graphics driver installed. Should I try and reinstall directx now?

And can't I just disable Aero completely?

I've uninstalled Afterburner. Windows is automatically installing the driver software for the graphics card. So I guess it will just restart on login like before.

At least we know it works without a graphics driver so hopefully it means it's a software problem and not a hardware problem cause that would be worse.

I was already using a none aero theme anyway but I selected it again just incase.

Any idea's what to do now?

Sorry for the amount of questions but is there a way to stop windows installing/updating the graphics driver so I can at least use normal windows for the time being.

What do you mean by flatten and reinstall?

Basically all I've been doing is:

1. Booting windows
2. It restarts on login
3. Boot in safe mode
4. Uninstall graphics drivers
5. Boot windows
6. Logs in and works without any drivers
7. Windows automatically installs graphics drivers
8. I either stay logged on and have limited use or restart computer
9. Go back to step 1

I have two system images backed up. One is from a few months ago where I did a clean install of windows and installed all the basic programs and drivers and the other is from 29th October (a few weeks ago) with a bunch of games and programs installed.

I'm just going to use the system image from a clean install and see if it works. I have the month old system image too so I can always revert to that if I need too.

If this doesn't work then it must be a hardware problem.

It's going to take a hour or so to recover the system image so I guess I'll post the results when it's done.

I really really appreciate the help you have been great mate! You are patient haha. Hopefully you will be able to help me fix this problem as well as anyone else who wants to help!

It annoys the hell out of me that something like this can just happen out of nowhere and create so many problems. I don't understand how this stuff happens..why couldn't it have just worked normally argh!!!

I hope we can find whatever caused this problem to occurr. Something must have been installed or downloaded to make this happen but I wonder what..

I'm attempting to do a clean install of Windows 7. I can't remember if I need to click upgrade or custom (advanced). Which one do I need to go with to do a clean install?
