Windows as far as I know, is the only OS that needs a reinstall from degenarating on its own, I just got done fighting the many freezes I am sure has happened to many of you. I cleaned the reg. & old app. data & I have been on for a while without a prob. I am sure it is just luck though, next reboot the whole thing will start again, I am just wondering why does it do this when you only surf safe sites & don't do anything risky to my system.

Can't say I've had that problem with Vista 64bit. Had to regularly reinstall XP and it peed me off so much that I moved to a Linux distro for a few years before coming back to Windows.

In December last year I installed the first Windows 7 beta.
To do so I wiped my machine and started "Fresh".
What I wiped from my machine was a 1.5yr old installation of Vista64.

Before Vista I was an XP user - I think I reinstalled XP about twice in all the time it was the current OS.

Before that it was Windows 2000 - Same again, a couple of installations during the lifetime of the OS and that was it.

No degregation of the OS, no slow down.
No need to run "Reg Cleaners" or "App Cleaners".

Sorry - I totally disagree that Windows destroys itself.
If it did I'd be forever doing OS reinstallations on the 120+ Windows workstations at work....we don't.

In my experience, XP does slow down over time if you're the type who installs and uninstalls lots of software. Lots of programs have rubbish uninstallers which don't remove the program's registry entries properly, and over time it bogs things down.

Having said that - I don't know what changed, but this doesn't seem to be an issue with Vista. I've installed loads of stuff, most of which has since been uninstalled, and my Vista install is just as quick as ever.

I know what you mean with XP.

But with Vista and W7 this is no longer a problem whatsoever.

Had Vista running on this machine for ages now, still as fast as the day I installed it. Maybe a bit faster in fact, in light of Superfetch.

XP was the only operating system that I can remember that would slow down over time, particularly after starting up into windows.

They have since fixed this little issue in Vista!

XP yeah, wasn't that it was running like a dog but you definitely see that fresh install snap disappear over the first few months of use. Been using Vista 64bit with an install from its release week and it feels as fresh as ever regardless of all the pesky little applications / games / drivers that have come and gone in that time.

If you abuse the system this happens.

I have 2 machines at work, one XP, and one win2k. They were installed in 2005! And they still both run sweet as a nut. It's just about not installing crap and all that associated umph. The XP machine has been caned hard with installs and various apps over the years. The start menu is 2 or so columns full of progs.

The win2k machine is a Dell somthing with P4 2.25 and 1GB of RAM BUS ram.... Although it's slow it's one of the most stable machines I use, uptimes of 60-70 days no problem.

Never had any of my installations slow down too much.
Of course the boot time is longer since it has to load more things in to memory but overall it's never been a noticeable difference.

I think I reinstalled Windows XP once but just because I wanted to start again, not because it had slowed down too much. Vista I have had for 2 years and never reinstalled.
