so doing homework and i need to replace the server operating system which is currently 2000, to another version, he likes 2003 apparently.

now i have been writing about all the benefits of it but i'm stuck as i don't understand the licensing for a server operating system so wonderginf if someone could explain it to me.

this will be used on 1 fileserver, though plans to upgrade to have 2 file servers, which connects 150 users.

does this mean then i need 150 versions of the server operating system? or just 1/2 for the fileservers?

as i have said i'm very lost so appreciate the help

Each server requires a server license.
So 2 servers, each will require its own license.

With regards client access to the servers you will need to purchase CALs (Client Access Licenses).
CALs are either setup as per seat or per connection and the first thing you need to ask yourself is will all 150 users need to access one or both of the file servers?
If the answer is yes, then you best purchase would be:

2x Windows Server 2003 licenses
150x Windows Server 2003 CALs.

You basically assign one CAL to each "user".
That CAL allows them to connect to any number of Windows servers.

ahhh i see now, thank you very much for that explanation.

holy smokes the prices are extremely high, £2500 for server plus 25 CALs! is there anywhere i can find cheaper to just buy a whole load of CALs? that way leaving me to decide which version of 2003 i should get

I would look on the MS site for partners that can help you with licensing and check out open licensing, prices for Retail products will be roughly the same, but with open licensing the company can spread the cost a little
