Windows server

or is server-pc your server name?

on the server, set up a user "x" and password "y", give share and ntfs permissions to the user x.

then browse to \\server-pc\sharename

you should be prompted for username and password - type

server-pc\x as the username and your password as the password.

Create a login then, easy enough!

Just to be pedantic though, it's really not a server!

If you want a box just for sharing files, you're better off with something like freenas

Erm... basics here.
If the server is Windows 7, and the client is windows XP. Where is your DNS server ?? Can either server or client ping each other ???

DNS is likely to be on a router, but even so, NetBIOS should be able to handle it if DNS isnt there

Make a Login account
and then set the permisions to Allow all for Everyone.

Login account to point the older OS in the right direction.

IF DNS is not resolving, have you tried \\"IP"\"DIR"

Creat a share folder on the server and create a user on the server called "files" with password files.

Then try to browse to the share and use the login and password you created

But remember to go into the security tab on the properties of the share folder and add the user that you created to the folder with the read/write permissions

so if you have a folder on the server called music, right click on it and goto permissions and add the user you created to it. then use that use when prompted.
