i have a pc here where a virus seems to of played havoc with the windows services so i cannot connect to the internet. if i do a windows repair (boot from cd, enter, f8, r) then will it reset the services to default?

You're best bet would be to re-install. If you really want to avoid that first restore the system files.

Safe Mode > Turn Off System Restore > Then go to Run > type sfc /scannow

You'll need your OS disk to hand.

Re-run your AV and Anti-Spyware applications. Once done run Hijack This and we can look over what's left.

Great, make sure you're in Safe Mode, System Restore is off. Also when you run your AV and Spybot or similar keep a note of any detections.

You can't boot into Safe Mode? Not usually a good sign. Some of the trickier malware adds itself to a system file like atapi.sys and then prevents you booting in to Safe Mode.

Give repair installation a go

Windows > F8 > R

If it works run your AV/Anti-Spyware software straight away to remove any leftovers.

In my experience, dealing with a virus/viruses usually takes 5 -10 minutes or so long it's hardly worth it, especially if reinstalling is an option. Are there any files you need to rescue off the system?

If you want to continue down the manual route just be aware that it could take hours, is very tedious and not the best way to spend New Years Eve! :D

its not my pc so not really sure how much is needed but they were pretty adamant they didnt want it formatted.

Well it seems Sfc won't run in Safe Mode... Silly.

If you run msconfig go to Services > Tick Hide all Microsoft Services > Untick anything that's left. Reboot and see what happens.

Completely agree. I've spent hours and hours using live disks, connecting drives to other PC's, trawling through system32 and the registry attempting to cure PC's for people and to be honest it's very rarely been worth the effort.

Malware has moved on from the days of simple file infection and hooking interrupts. It's all about poxy downloaders, dodgy dll's and root kits now... :(

im only here til 5:30 so if it aint done by then it aint getting done til sat so no major worries about that, just never had this problem with virus infections before.

lol unfortunatly virus removal is £55+Vat and a fresh install is £65+Vat so im pretty sure thats why they dont want to go down the reinstall route.
if it was my company i would just do it for same price but still.
