Windows Setup on New SATA II Drive?

Hi All,

Just got a new 200gb Seagate sataII drive. I've connected it, gone into computer management, formatted it and created a partition.

It's now as E: New Volume (Healthy) in computer management.

What I am trying to do now is boot from this cd rom, and install windows XP on this and make this the primary drive.

I then want to wipe my old IDE C: drive and make it a storage drive (or possibly sell it - it's 80 GB Samsung.

Problem is, when I run windows setup, it only gives me the option to setup Windows XP on the C: drive, I can't see the SATAII drive listed there to select it.

What do I need to do? A friend told me to remove the jumper completely from the back, so I have. Do I need to make the SataII drive set in IDE mode to be recognised at Windows Setup as a HD?

I just want to install XP on this....and make this the primary HD.

I have windows XP SP2 already....do I need to slipstream? I don't have a floppy either. Actually, no idea what slipstreaming is, sounds confusing? Is there a useful link?

Yes, my windows XP disc has SP2 applied to it.

It still wants to install windows on C: (my 80 gig drive) and is telling me there is no other HD in bios.

But I can clearly see my new E: drive in computer management.

I don't need slipstream as my cd is SP2.

But why the hell isn't it picking up my SATAII (already formatted and partitioned) as a HD in my BIOS? I don't understand....

It picks it up as a HD in Boot Config...but when I make it primary HD, and run windows setup, it's in Windows Setup that it cannot see it.

Can anyone help?

All I want to do is install windows XP sp2 on a new Seagate Sata II drive on an ASROCK 939 DUAL VSTA board.

A friend told me I have to do it from inside windows on my old HD, just put XP disk in - tried this and tried bios, yet it is still seeing only the C: HD (my old 80 gig drive).

I'm going mad...someone out there must know...

I don't have a floppy drive.

Can anyone help?

Yep, running latest BIOS for my board, before even putting the SATAII drive in...

Can see the new drive as a Drive in BIOS windows setup is just picking up C: and not the new drive...I don't get it... It's formatted and partitioned as NTFS (did that already in computer management).

Windows setup just wants to install XP on C: I'm not getting E: listed at all.

Do I need to change SATAII mode to IDE in BIOS? Or Or leave it as SATA?

Thanks guys for the help there.

Unfortunately, I didn't have a floppy and the F6 loaded the SATA driver, but it still wasn't seen in it.

Luckily I managed to do it this way: (just in case anyone else out there has a SATAII problem with a Asrock DUAL (agp/pci-e) board.

1. Format new SATAII drive in windows ->Control Panel-> Admin Tools->Compiuter Management->Disk Management.
Create a partition on it and right click and make active.

2. Disable old hardrive in Bios, make new SATAII one primary.
3. In Bios IDE Config, change SATAII mode to "IDE"
4. Boot from XP CD ROM - Should detect your drive now and install XP on it.
5. Once installed, re-enter BIOS and change SATAII mode back to "SATA".

That worked for me, though was kinda painstaking to figure out!
