Windows sounds not playing

Hey guys, need a little help.

Here on the "Family" pc, a Sony Vaio all in one type thing, just fixed the volume on the keyboard by updating the drivers, but I am still having a problem with windows sounds, the fact that they don't play, at all.

All sounds, music and all works in any program that plays them, but windows will NOT play sounds of its own, like the startup/shutdown noise, its nothing big, but its bugging me, any ideas?

Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices

click the Sounds tab at the top, select one of the program events that has a little icon of a speaker next to it..click the play button.

Anything?

Nope, won't play there, yet the sounds play fine in WMP.

Play button is greyed out, btw.

Fixed it using System Restore to before I installed MediaPortal on here, must have messed with the codecs!
