Windows SSD : Superfetch, prefetch and drive indexing

I heard that in some cases disabling Superfetch can make things slower than usual.

Would be interesting to know if this is the case if you try turning this off as i was going
to disable this as well but decided not to bother in the end.

Nope that's Prefetch.

Prefetch loads pieces of program files into RAM. By disabling this feature, you free up your system memory

SuperFetch is designed to cache files used often. Given the low access times of SSDs, this option can be disabled. If you installed Windows 7 on an SSD, it should, in fact, be disabled automatically.

Instant loading of apps is instant. Just because RAM is faster it doesn't make the apps open any more instantly! Superfetch and Prefetch are redundant, and that's why the Intel Toolbox will disable them when you run it.

Drive indexing is still a good idea if you need to search for content within files... which is what it's there for.

Prefetch writes to the HDD quite a bit, plus since SSD's are fast turning it off to save the SSD life won't make much of a difference it's said.

I just moved the prefetch folder to a hdd instead so that it'll only write to that drive yet still load the most used programs from the SSD.

use ocz's ssd tool to disable the necessary services and features. Easier that way. I disable all indexing and you must make sure you disable drive sleep or you can damage the ssd.

I actually went and enabled superfetch but there is a registry key that i do not remember exactly but you can set different options for superfetch and i set the option that is not disabled but it is not fully enabled. almost like a light version of it. i think it is only enabled partly on shutdown or something.

mine is set to 2, it keeps the superfetch folder very small.

I had an ocz ssd 1 that was being used by this guy at work as i had swapped it out for a ocz 2 and he reset the power management settings to default even after i advised against it. The ssd stopped working and I sent it off to ocz for replacement.

Nah this sounds rubbish. HDD suspend shouldn't be a failing point for SSDs

Think of all the devices that suspend from notebooks, tablets to PCs

HDD suspend is too fundamental and important to get wrong

I only ever use sleep. Works fine.
Its just a coincidence. Unless there is more proof apart from "My friend had a failure after sleeping it once".

My computer sleeps a lot of the time. I rarely shut it down and my SSD hasn't failed because of it. Or do you mean the SSD powering down after it hasn't been used for x amount of minutes?

inside windows 7 power management adavanced options there is an option for hard drive sleep. It reduces the power to the hard drive after X amount of time. I think it is advised to disable this feature. I disabled this feature because it was causing problems with my sata drives and read on forums that it is recommended to not use sleep with ssd. turning off your monitor after X amount of time is ok but i would not go in to hibernation mode or anything like that with ssd. I think it can cause problems.

Nah I think it was just a one off. Hibernation or sleep shouldn't affect an SSD. Hibernation would just turn it off, so if that can't be done to an SSD then you wouldn't be able to shut down your PC.

It doesn't cause problems.

People just disable sleep on SSDs because really, what's the point. The boot is almost as fast as recovery from sleep, except sleep uses a lot of drive space.
