Windows support Scam break down

One of my work mates fell for it and let them have remote access to her system.

If her husband hadn't of walking in when he did she would have given them credit card
details as well, I had to have the system for a couple of days after that and give it a
proper good clean up and make sure that nothing was injected into the system while
they had remote access.

I did find a couple of key-loggers on there but there is no proof that it came from these
cow boys.

I made the last one to call me hang up in frustration.

Hehe,, All these money grabbing phonecalls just make me sooooooooo angry..Bring back the good old days, when no one was after your money through phonecalls... fu**ing blow a whistle down the line at them all.

MY poor mum has managed to get herself onto one of these calling lists. She's currently getting at least a call a week from an "Unknown" number. When she picks up she is told there is something wrong with her computer.

Thankfully she spoke to me the very first time it happened and I explained everything to her. She still gets a little worried when people call her, but I think I've trained her well enough now to just hang up on these SOBs.

Telephone preference service = no dodgy calls. google is your friend!

I'm signed up on that and I still got calls from them.

They are hilarious. They say they are from Windows, then you say "Microsoft don't call if there is a problem" and their reply is "We're not from Microsoft, we're from Windows". Classic.

TPS is a voluntary system. Most UK companies who care will take note of this service and won't call people who have opted out.
However if the company in question hasn't signed up they don't have to worry about it. It also doesn't cover foreign companies.

The only real option for my mum would be to get BT to block all "Unknown" numbers. However as people like doctors etc use this that could be a problem.

Just need to remind my old mum every other week that she needs to ignore them, hopefully she won't do anything silly.

Im impressed by the aussie keeping his cool so long, i would have lasted seconds on the phone with the crap they saying.

The whole scam is very well organized and sounds like a proper call centre, i still dont get how people can fall for this scam, unless your elderly or have no common sense, have little knowledge with Windows.

That covers a massive portion of windows pc users, anybody with an ounce of knowledge will know it's a scam and not get caught.

Never had one of these. Would be interesting to play completely dumb.

I tried that once but the rubbish they spout gets irritating quickly. I got them to explain who they were and how they could see that my computer 'had errors' when it was turned off, and then explained that I worked in IT, knew that there wasn't anything wrong with my computer and knew that this was a scam.

They rushed the end of the call by saying something like 'no sir this isn't a scam, but since you work with computers I'm sure you can fix the problem yourself' and then hung-up.

They haven't called back since.

I was at a clients once doing a network install and they got a phone call ironically from one of these companies. The customer had heard of this scam and passed the phone over to me, My initial question to them was "can you see the computer is online now?" They responded with "yes we can see you have multiple problems with your computer now did you want us to remote in and fix it?" So I just said "funny you can see its online, Considering I haven't plugged in the customers network switch yet so nothing is online what so ever." The line went quiet surprisingly and they started to say this must have come up on their systems as an historic record so windows asked them to call to fix it at a cost of £200. My responce to this was " Just so you know I'm an ICT technician who is Microsoft gold certified, and what your saying is complete tripe ( not my exact wording ;) ) I suggest you take my clients number off of your phone system or they will proceed with legal action against yourselves. Needless to say the phone went dead, So I decided to do a 1471 and they didn't have a withheld number. I then rang them and tried their own scam against them and offered my services at £400 they seemed somewhat confused with this and eventually I just cut the phone off after wasting their time. My client was in fits of laughter during the call too, was quite a funny really.
