Hi

With GG removing Rosetta support, there’s a few Intel apps that I would be very reluctant to replace, mainly because I don’t want to be move to a cloud subscription for the newer version.

I know it’s possible to Remote Desktop… but is there an app that would allow me to serve just the app itself without the whole desktop like Terminal services remote app?

The plan is to get a Mac mini and keep macOS 26 on it.. load it with those intel apps then offer those services to my other Macs running GG+…

Parallels has coherence mode. I think VMware fusion might have something similar as well.

Thanks but you can't run a vm of macOS in coherence mode.

I think installing x11 server on the "server" machine and then creating an alias of terminal command to run the app will run the application natively on the server while presenting the gui on the client machine. It's been a fair few years since I've messed with it... I think it was snow lep, last time I played with x11.

Golden Gate isn't removing Rosetta at all, seems to be a common myth on the internet because people can't read. It's the LAST version to support it, so MacOS 28 will not support it, but you're good for now. It'll not install automatically on upgrade, and it'll throw deprecation warnings. GG is however unable to run the native OS on non Apple Silicon chips.

I suspect Rosetta will still be around in the container API anyway for x86_64 binaries on Linux containers too.

I think the confusion comes from the fact Golden Gate does not support Intel Macs but does support Rosetta.

The original briefing was that it was getting removed… even in April.. serval Apple staff and not the ones at the store told me Rosetta was getting removed, and brief out to start planning for it. A lot of the MDM vendors and MSPs started posting out methods to deal with it. MacOS 26.5 (?) added a notification warning about x86 apps stop working soon. This was before WWDC..

Me personally, I haven’t actually read anything online til now as I took what the Apple staff who are pretty high up in the chain of command said as gospel.. all I did was spent 10 mins to write some code to be used within our MDM to scan our estate for intel apps and handed it off to a colleague to deal with.

They must have dial it back and delayed the removal of it…. Work wise, I don’t personally use any intel based app… it’s just at home I have a few apps that I don’t want to upgrade to the newer versions as they have gone to a subscription based model… anyway if it’s been pushed back for another year… I’ll deal with it then.

Thanks..

Again, planned deprecation does not equal removal - they've communicated since M1 announcement that same as PowerPC to Intel Rosetta 2 would be a limited time things the same as Rosetta 1. I suspect you've either misunderstood your 'contacts' or they've misunderstood themselves. People really struggle to understand the difference between x86_64 applications and x86_64 OS. I don't exactly blame you for not realising as peoples communication skills even in channel are absolutely appalling when it comes to the detail.

I'll be very surprised if they drop Rosetta translation in their virtualisation/containers API though, as that does cross-arch deployments similar (or maybe even using) QEMU. Be interesting to see regardless.

Although interesting:

Rosetta functionality will be available only for certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks.

As someone who spent a good few years in MSP and in Channel, 99.999% of them don't have a clue, and have very little advanced knowledge of upcoming features etc.

So is this wrong?

Not wrong, it'll probably stop working in MacOS 28 so far. They've just apparently increased the warnings.
