Windows - the last simple thing you found out

ctrl + scroll wheel on mouse - handy if you dont know it

Damnit was just about to post cause I thought I'd just found two by accident then I saw this!

Anyway, what I thought I'd just discovered was...

In Internet Explorer, hold "shift" and scroll the mousewheel - scrolls forward and back through viewed pages without pressing the back and forward buttons on the IE toolbar, and

Hold "ctrl" and scroll the mousewheel and it changes the font size in the selected window, regardless of application.

...just saw this:

Right click on the Desktop and create a new Shortcut
Point the shortcut to an executable--such as c:\windows\system32\calc.exe
Call the shortcut www.microsoft.com
Start Internet Explorer and type "www.microsoft.com" into the address bar

calc.exe is then run

?

google for
"Microsoft: Shortcut 'trick' is legitimate feature"
for more info

Havent seen this one mentioned yet.

In internet explorer address bar, type "google" or whatever site press Ctrl+Enter it adds the http://www. & the .com

Justin

Edit, forgot the thread title, i dont know what i last found out but, i like using that shortcut anyway

I use that all the time. There are a couple more for Firefox users.

Shift + Enter
This will add the Http://www. to the begining and .net to the end

Shift + CTRL + Enter
This will add the Http://www. to the begining and .org to the end

Less useful but still handy on the odd occasion. To be honest I'd prefer to be able to change those in the settings so I can set one as .co.uk

Also ALT + Enter will open the new page in a new tab, and this also works for the google search field inthe top corner.

right click start menu -> Properties -> uncheck "open submenus when I pause on them with my mouse"

Makes you have to click on submenus, so that they don't all pop up when you move your mouse. :)

I only knew about the text size. That's great!

Also, the renaming the ip to 'router' is excellent, as is Alt + S to post a reply on these forums.

I was not aware, that in windows XP PRO (not certain about home) that the default admin account is always enabled.

to test it, go to the windows logon, type administrator as the login name, NO password. it will log you in, and enable you to change your passwords and so on for your windows machine.

To disable, right click on my computer, manage, go to users, and you will see the administrator account, right click and then properties, disable it.

*EDIT*

as for the windows+M or windows+D

If you have 2 monitors in dual mode (not in clone) if you press windows+M it minimize everything on monitor 1. Pressing windows+SHIFT+M will bring it back. Windows+D will minimize all screens.

I don't know if this is a windows only thing but alt+<-- (Left arrow is the same as back) and the same applies to alt+--> (Right Arrow for forward) handy when you are somebody elses computer and they have a crap dirt filled rollerball mouse or on a laptop.

Ctrl+Alt+Shift opens task manager. I don't know if that was mentioned already.

Ctrl+Shift+Esc you mean?

This would only happen if you didn't set an administrator password when you installed windows.

Another thing I learnt was when using XP and someone has the welcome screen enabled so that it shows the pretty pictures instead of a standard log in screen, you can just pres CTRL+ALT+DEL and it will bring the proper login screen up instead.

And was a MAJOR back door in for that guy who claimed to have found loads of UFO information

Here's a few pointless ones

Make sure you have a maximised window first, eg, Firefox, Explorer..

Start > Run >

Type in a program, eg, calc, and immediataly after pressing enter, press CTRL. The program will open behind other active windows. Don't ask me how I discovered that one!

In MSPAINT, copy this smiley :) and paste it into paint. Press the shift key and drag the smiley around. WOW.

----
In the task manager, click the performance tab and then double click on the graph.

----
In Firefox, go to bookmarks and click the mousewheel on a folder - it opens everything in that folder.

You probably all know the last two.

This applies if you double click on any tab in task manager. For the list of processes you just dont double click in the white box (click on the grey border)

Ric.

There's another one for Media Player users. Right click the taskbar, click toolbars, click Windows Media Player. Now you can control MP with the taskbar.

To be fair, most users dont do this. Either way :)

yes most users installing home dont do this. And I believe Home edition does not allow this type of login (only in safemode - so yes its still a whopping big security hole)
Pro edition expects that you are a Pro and lets you get away with this ;)

I have to admit, I think when I very first installed XP I do remember setting admin passwords, but I think after installing it on friends computers all with home systems and so on, I think it kinda slipped my mind... a bit silly tbh :(
