Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running

I did a fresh install of windows last night due to new hardware and had mega dramas with being able to download any updates at all, so i did some looking and it seems many have had this problem.

I tryed a number of fixes but nothing worked untill i tryed this.

Click Start
Type: cmd
Right click on cmd in start menu and select 'Run as Administrator'
Type: net stop wuauserv
Hit Enter
Type: ren c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old
Hit Enter
Type: net start wuauserv
Hit Enter
Type: exit
Hit Enter

Attempt to download updates

It worked right away no probs, i thought it'd be nice to share for anyone else. I have looked here for the fix and had no luck (sorry if it is already here and i didnt find it)

Ok maybe give us a clue as to which version of windows you are running

I had this. Was down to the time and date not being set correctly.

Come to think of it, nor did OS/2.
