Windows Update KB980408

Updates? Whats that? lol

Hardly ever use the Microsoft Updates. Been years since i let them run! Never have any problems either!

Thats made me lol, probably running as an admin with no AV or FW in a DMZ?

To be honest, the great thing about botnets is the user doesnt always notice they are infected, hence they do not make any extensive effort to heal there machine, hence the botnet continues to grow.

Used Vista now on win 7, still not using updates. No problems at all.

I don't use an av but i do run one now and again to check pc. Can't remember the last time i had a virus on the pc.

I don't go visiting dodgy websites either so that helps cut down the possibility of infections in the pc.

You are aware you can still be infected without actually doing anything to cause it? Legitimate websites can be hijacked without making it obvious!

Anyway, regardless of your personal stance on IT security, I'm curious if you could expand on your opinion that Windows updates are a con? I'm having a hard time understanding that point of view.

I run an AV and a Malware program once a month and not had any infections for a very very long time.

I hope for your case that you dont pick up a virus the day after you run a scan. A whole month for a keylogger to obtain all your passwords, bank accounts, steam etc. Certainly a risk that I wouldnt want to take.

A con is a trick, so maybe MS are tricking you into installing things like WGA? I dunno. If their only trick is to improve the operating system with updates then call me gullible.

Well, I could understand it if Microsoft were shipping a completely unusable OS that would only work once you used Microsoft Update once a week (anyone pathetic enough to say that's what they're doing, don't bother), but not all of the updates Microsoft release are to fix problems. Some are to improve things, some are to add functionality, some are to enable new technologies...

To decide never to use Windows Update seems utterly crazy to me. Unless you pirate your OS's of course...

No I'll admit I haven't, although the only change to my W7 install was that windows update. Will give that a go later.

Might be time to straighten the network cables too!

That is weird, google shows a few hits for KB980408 network problems, haven't found a cure for it though.

What motherboard / network card do you guys have?

There's a lot of clever people at OcUK so I'd be keen on someone enlightening me.

I don't ever update windows until there is an official service pack or if I find the need to add a particular feature to my OS. I find that a lot of the windows updates are released before they're ironed out, which is pretty inherent if you think about it. So waiting until the service pack has never ever resulted in any issues what so ever.

There seems to be a lot of users with perfectly functional systems which, after an update, start to get massive problems. The worst is when you get system slow downs due to dodgy updates or useless components being installed which haven't killed a process but just crippled it.

A lot of the updates seem to be security related but I've always used a third party firewall and always will. I've not had any problems and would find it hard to believe a piece of software was operating around my firewall. I keep all my alerts switched on to notify me about every operation (which can be irritating as hell to most people). This is also a major reason as to why I would never trust the built in Windows security suite.

I can understand it being useful to a user who isn't particularly computer literate or someone on the opposite end of the scale who likes to tinker with their setup and networks.

If it aint broke, don't fix it.

Ok, well it looks like no one has anything to say about that. I guess the lads who were called dumb for doing the same aren't so dumb afterall.

(shameless prod)
