Hi all,

At work we've not really exited the darker ages, and so we're still running Windows XP SP1. An upgrade to SP2 is still months away!

Anyway, thi is the poblem. I just bought a Netgear WG111 USB Wireless Networking Adapter. The item stalls at the beginning, in that I am asked to download a patch that will sort out some USB issues. Thi fails to install, citing a QFE Installer error. The dialogue box says "WEUpdate cannot retrieve information needed for setup from database."

Can anyone please help me?

Thanks,

Irf.

And is the update it's trying to download only meant for SP2 ?
What is the name of the update file it fails on?

The file I have downloaded from the MS website is called Q822603_XPE_SP2_X86_ENU.exe.

I know it's got "SP2" in the title, but I didn't think that this meant it was solely for SP2 because of the following text on the same page:

Brief Description
QFE: request for XPE componentization of Q822603 - Availability of the Windows XP SP1 USB 1.1 and 2.0 Update
This update addresses the Availability of the Windows XP SP1 USB 1.1 and 2.0 Update (822603)

Any ideas?

Regarding the MS website instructions, that's pretty much what I've already tried while looking at that very page. Still no luck.

I've also tried installing older drivers (back to V2), and still nothing. It's almost as if the patch supplied by MS is there to make the USB funtionality work better, but for some reason it can't. I dunno what the "database" it's mentioning actually is or does.

I'm pretty much almost at a loss now....

Maybe I should try an older and simpler (non-g) adapter?

Could it be your USB device is a USB2.0 device and you only have a USB1.0 port?

Can you try it on another PC? Are you behind a firewall/proxy? Networked/stand-alone?

I've looked at my main PC where this also happens and it's reporting a USB 2.0 host controller. The initial PC that I hit this snag on is brand new and is a Core2Duo, but I can't get to that right now. I'd imagine that it's also got USB 2.0.

The Netgear card reportedly supports both USB 1.1 and 2.0.

As mentioned just now, I've tried it on my main PC and got the same message. Yes, all our PCs are networked and behind a firewall.
