Hi all

I haven't got a disc drive for my new build... How easy is it to find and install Windows 10 from a USB... Also do you install it onto SSD or HDD

Your prerogative to be honest buddy.

I use a 240GB SSD for my OS and a few games. Media/documents etc are on a separate HDD.

What SSD(s) or HDD(s) have you got to start with?

Well I did have a 120Gb SanDisk but sold that and I'm considering getting the Samsung EVO 250GB at around £90 from OCUK I also have a 1TB HDD

We're all different. I've only got PUBG and BF1 installed as games, as a result I've no issue with them and my OS on a 240GB SSD.

If you on the other hand have a massive Steam library and you play lots of games weekly ask yourself if 250GB will be enough.

If you're like me then 250GB will be fine.

Yeah I think I'd consider myself to be like you... I will only be playing BF1... I Racing... Euro truck SIM and Fifa.

I have a 240GB SSD for OS + BF1 and still have about 130GB free so it's possible to put about 3 games on one with the OS with no issues. I then use a 1TB HDD for all other games and Docs + Programs.

For creating a Windows 10 USB boot drive, you will need a copy of the Windows 10 ISO and I suggest using Rufus to create the USB stick. When installing Windows, make sure that only your SSD is plugged in to your computer. Only add another HDD after installation is complete.

Thanks for this bud I didn't know that having a HDD plugged in will make a difference, I will unplug when installing... I'm not sure where to get a copy of Windows 10... ive seen them on a Auction site for £20 but don't know if to trust it

Obtaining the ISO to install windows is free and can be obtained by using the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft. I think that by doing it this way, it creates a bootable USB at the same time. Can't comment on any licence key though.

or direct from Microsoft's website :)

If it sounds too cheap to be true then it probably is - most cheap versions are "grey market keys" - essentially in breach of license terms and therefore technically illegal.

You don't need to unplug the other HDD, just choose the right one at install. And no need for Rufus, just get the media creation tool direct from the MS website, they made it very easy to create a bootable USB.

In rare situations though you can end up with the bootloader installed on the hard drive rather than the SSD (which is then fun if the hard drive is later removed).

Are you on your own Windows Machine now and have a valid Windows 8.1 licence that you will be installing with?

If you do, you could download the Windows 8.1 ISO, burn to ISO and then install from USB. As long as you have a big enough USB drive, you wouldn't have to spend any money yet.
