I am bloody hacked off!

I have just been told I have to re-activate my Windows install.

Apparently too many hardware changes!

I have had this PC for years, never had this OEM copy of Windows on any other machine. It has went through the usual stuff.

A new CPU some years back, the basic memory , then another stick, then another brand, then a better model, a new DVD drive, a sound card, a TV card, a new GPU, then another then another.

I recently fitted a new DVD drive, and puts one of its old Graphics cards back, while fitting it into its old case, I put the sound card and TV card in different slots due to not watching the original configuration, found one not to work and swapped them back.
Now I added a wireless card and BOOM, too many hardware changes.

What a joke!

It's all automated. My 64-bit version wouldn't activate over the internet, as my system time was borked. (Found out later that the date was 7 years out).

I had to phone to activate. Maybe with re-activation you'll have to talk to someone, even better. Not hard at all. :D

Can't you just activate it online? I remember my old Advent saying this, I just entered the serial, and bang it worked.

Did you build your own pc? Or bought it pre-built? If pre-built, there should be a sticker on it's side with the windows serial number. If you built it yourself, you should have the serial with your dvd case it came in somewhere.

Hmmm,

I could not do it initially due to a dodgy new Wireless thingy which I am having problems with, just reconnected my internet with wire, and followed instructions, start, all programs, accessories, activate windows, done?

No retyping keys or that?

Bit of a pain though, and I am not sure the current spec of old bits will stay that way? I thought as long as it was genuine Windows with the original motherboard all was fine for swapping bits around?

Due to my graphics card dieing I put another in my PC to test, which de-activated my PC. I need to format soon so I've not bothered and just 'bypassed it' (there's no point wasting an activation). It's a complete pain seeing as pirates can easily avoid it.

It takes all of 5 minutes over the phone, which is automated. It isn't asking much really.

No the licence is tied to the motherboard. Given that it sounds like you changed nearly everything else in the machine it's hardly surprised Windows is asking some questions.

Give the number a call. It'll take 3 minutes

To update,

Once I had my wireless up and running it was a case of start/programs/accesories/activate windows.

I was not asked for a key. But had to install validation tool.

This morning when I booted up the PC it asked me to allow this to install and connect, no little box on the bottom right telling me my Windows is not activated.

So it seems to be sorted, and no phone calls or typing in keys, or re-installing Windows :)

Yeah I have used Linux and I prefer Windows XP and Windows 7, Linux has gone downhill ;)

So after your initial post, where you ranted against the whole thing, it turns out all you needed to do was connect to the internet and reactivate

Your a joke. Just phone them up and get the automation to reactivate it for you :)

Hmm, I didn't laugh at the time, but it was a long day.

As for me being a joke, well, considering the changes were over a number of years I feel there is nothing wrong with expressing an anoyance at the matter.

Of course I did not have to call them, as it was due to installing a PCI card and setting up a wireless connection, which when I did the following allowed me an internet connection.

Well I guess it was sort of expected, long day, late night, installing a wireless PCI card and hoping to set up a wireless connection, it not working off the bat so no initial internet, and too many hardware changes taking effect all at the same time

Still it is a little annoying that changing a few components over the years, including putting an old graphics card BACK in, can lead to a slight inconvenience.

Why not make it a single activation licence like Apple do with thier OS's and let people play with different ram, graphics cards and CPU's. After all they all need replacing in occassion.

No doubt the motherboard will go next, my sort of Karma :D
