I know that windows vista retail is transferable to as many pcs as you want and that the OEM version is stuck to a single motherboard.

However, what about the upgrade edition. Say i have a laptop with a legit copy of xp and then upgrade this to vista. This invalidates my xp key legally (though no system exists to ban it). Can i then simply revert to xp on my laptop and then use the upgrade version another version of xp on a different laptop/desktop?

Similarly, will i be able to use the vista upgrade workaround to transfer the OS freely without having to phone up microsoft (i.e. the same as the retail version)

Thanks.

Not totally sure about the first part, but I don't really see why not, as long as you're only using it on one system at a time, and the system has a qualifying license (e.g. legal XP install).

As for not having to phone up, the upgrade workaround doesn't get you around activation - you might still need to phone up.

I have had to call up and do the whole typing in 50 digits on the phone, speak to a guy, answer some questions that they should be able to get the answers for from your CD key, answer some more quesions, then type 50 digits into the PC.

I've got XP Retail and Vista Upgrade, so can move it around freely :)
