Trying to format a 500GB Samsung (HD501LJ), in anticipation of using it as my primary Vista drive. My order of events is:

*installed it as a sole drive, used the Vista disk to format it with NTSC (long format), afterwards found out that upgrade edition Vista isn't like upgrade edition XP in as much as you require an existing installation on the disk.
*put in XP disk, chose partition, asked for a quick format, error message about unusable drive/unable to complete format.
*put old primary HDD back into system (running Vista), new 500GB as secondary. Can't format it still. Error message as thread title.

Am I missing something here?

try deleting the partition which is there and remaking it. all i know is vista and xp ntfs is slightly different, but when i tried vista out it installed etc just fine to a partition that was made in gparted.

I'm in now...I eventually figured as much, but given a couple of 'proper' formats on a 500GB drive I was fast running out of patience. Thanks!
