Windows won't boot

I have just installed a new hard disk, which is essentially replacing another one, so the number of hard drives has not changed.

After installing the new hard drive - on a different IDE channel, I put it in it's permanent place and started the computer. It boots up, POSTS and gets all the way to the 'windows is starting' up screen and then hangs there and gets no further.

What can be the matter? I have an an older Gigabyte GA-7DXR motherboard with RAID and it handled itself fine with the older drive.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? If I unplug one of the drives then the computer runs just fine for some reason.

I'm guessing here that because it's on a different IDE channel the drive letters or device numbers have changed. Maybe this could be the problem? Start in Safe Mode to have a look around?

When you say a different IDE channel do you mean different to the one you are replacing?
I think Hades was on the right track, if you have moved you system drive to a different location there will be trouble booting!

I'm guessing he means he started with drive (1) and (2). Then added drive (3) and copied one of the others across- let's assume it's (2). After that he removed (2) and put (3) back on the same channel as (2) was previously.

The net result will be that Windows is looking for stuff on (3) but it's looking for it on a different IDE channel.

If what hades said is true, how did you copy the HDD?
