Hi,

On the family computer, for some reason Vista won't boot.
It gets to the blue progress bar, and it never seems to end. Eventually it just freezes.
When I try to boot the last known good settings it does the same.
When I try to boot in safe mode, it gets to "crcdisk.sys" and stops.

I put in the disk I used to install Vista with in the first place, but it stops at "Boot from CD/DVD" and does nothing. I can't hear the disc spinning either.

What could be the problem?

Thanks in advance.

Ati HD 4670 512MB
AMD 64 X2 7750+ Black Edition
OCZ 500w Power Supply
Samsung Spinpoint F1 320GB
Gigabyte GA-M61PME-S2 PCI-E DDR2
OCZ 4GB PC2-6400C5 Gold Series DDR2
Samsung 22x DVD±RW

I reset the cmos, then ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool, which found nothing.
No cd will boot, I tried with a ubuntu cd and it just did nothing. It freezes when it says "Boot from CD/DVD:"

How should I go about doing memtest or hard disk diagnostic if it won't read CDs?

Thanks.

so it wont boot from hard disk or cd/dvd?

odd, have you had any other issues with it recently? and power cuts or surges that you know of? hasnt been moved recently?

try downloading the "ultimate boot disk" and booting from that to do a chkdsk (or similar), maybe if youre trying to boot from the windows disk its trying to run a file or driver that isnt playing nicely with some hardware?

No, there's been no other problems with it recently and it's been in the same place for ages. A power cut could have been a possibility, but I'm not sure.
It's not booting from any disk, it simply doesn't spin the disk when I tell it to boot from the CD.

how old is it?

i guess its a possibility that the drive controller is fried.. but on the off chance id open it up and double check all the connections to the drives. stranger things have happened than the connections having dodgy contacts..

Got it at the end of February. I'll have a look at it.

Somehow, while it was off for an hour, it decided it would work when I tried to boot from the CD. I did the Windows Repair thing from the disk and now it works all good. Also Kaspersky kept telling me it was corrupt so I've fixed that too.
