Hi Ive got a pc that I built with Ock parts earlier this year that been running fine, but now all I get is as far as the windowsXP banner and then the pc reboots.

The pc is running XP sp2 and has the following spec:-

GigaByte GA-G33M-D2SR mb
Intel Dual core 1.8GHz (o/clk to 3GHz)
1G Elixir DDR2 1066-PC8500
400W psu

Running the windowsXP DVD and using the "Repair" option doesnt seem to help much. ChkDsk runs ok so the HD seems fine. Cant see any other useful commands..

Dont really want to wipe the Hd as I need to get some files off...
Maybe the Windows system or config files are corrupt?

Any ideas about repairing this would be most appreciated..

Cheers

Got this from a mag that I was given, thats been pretty useful for me.

1. Try loading into Safe Mode (after post, hit F8)
2. Remove any unnecessary peripherals - printers, USB Keys, Ext Drives, etc and see if that boots.
3. Try booting using the on-board graphics card, removing any PCI Cards.
4. Try booting with only one RAM stick in at a time - a side note to this, try memtest86+

Failing any of that, get your hands on a Linux Live CD, and an external hard drive. Boot with the Live CD, and copy all of your data to the external hard drive/USB Memory Stick. And reinstall Windows.

If memtest picks up any errors, the problem lays with your RAM.

Ok thanks for that I'll give it a go....

Tried running Knoppix which runs ok and can see the HDisc ok.

Cheers
