I have been roped in to repair a friends laptop.

It hangs when Shutting down xp.

How can i establish what is causing this to happen?

There are no dodgy processes running, all normal and some addition HP processes (It's a HP laptop).

Cheers,

Chris

Everything is now up to date but still have the problem.

Any programs out there which are likely to help?

EDIT - Also the process "System" is using 100% CPU, I think the two are related.

If it states that the "System Idle Process" is running between 70% & 100% then you have a virus or a nasty spyware program. Download and install the following programs to ensure safe & secure and also for removing the problem:

Avast Antivirus Home Edition
Sygate Personal Firewall
AdAware SE

All free programs!

PS. I have had the same problem on many occasions and these programs will solve it.

No it's not SIP.

It's just "System"

I have looked into it and about 50% of the CPU is being hogged by deferred procedure calls and the rest by hardware interrupts.

Forgive me if I've misunderstood

Your saying that if my system idle process on my XP box is at around 99% for example, I have a virus?

Well that's wrong because the system idle process is there for a reason, its what your CPU does when its idle! Its not a virus, spyware or anything like that. Its just a count of idle cpu cycles, and is required for scheduling (one of the few things that rely on it) for example.

SIP on mine is at around 99% ever since i can remember looking at the task manager

SIP IS NOT my problem.

The Process "system" is using ALL of the CPU.

This is killing battery life and I also believe why the laptop will not shutdown.

Any ideas why?

Sorry fella but thats completely wrong, as has been stated above. I shall go look up its exact details!

In computing, The System Idle Process is a process in the Microsoft Windows operating system that displays, as a percentage, how much CPU resources are "idle" and available for use at any given time. The name of this "process" may be a misnomer, however, as the System Idle Process is more of a counter and less of a process that actually uses the resource percentage that it displays.

i'd better go fix all our pc's in work pronto

@thread starter

try running 'ewido', download the 15 day trial and see if it finds any crap on your pc

likely to be something bad on there if you've not been patched up tbh..

The thing is the PC was System Restored the other day by my friend as she had this problem.

There was one virus on there.

I think I will do a system restore myself, the soundcard wasn't installed properly so perhaps some other hardware wasnt to?!?

Well I am re-installing XP now but not via the restore disks.

The laptop came with XP Home on CD, something they dont seem to anymore.

I will then have the fun of finding all the drivers too! :D

Oooo this is interesting, last night my PC has just started to do this!

Nothing has changed on the comp, nothing has been installed (apart from WoW patch). Mmmm.... wierd.

Right, I think the shutdown issue is something hardware related since during the first XP install screen when it is supposed to restart the computer it just hung.

I will try updating the bios as I have noted an update on the HP site.

Any other ideas? There are no ACPI options in the BIOS.

Try the User Profile Hive Cleanup service - available on MS website, or on my webspace

More info here

...although I'm not sure about the 100% CPU usage. I used to have that problem, but it was at startup and it was to do with DNS... so it's probably different.
