My sisters laptop (Dell vostro) has decided it no longer wants to load XP.
Last night it was all fine but this morning it just stays on the XP splash screen.

Sometimes if left on that screen for 10+ mins it will then error check the hard disk and then reboot. Then the same thing happens. More often though it doesn't go to check disk and just stays on the splash screen.

Safe mode won't load.
Last good known config makes no difference.

Any ideas? Is reloading/restoring windows the only way?

Thanks

Could try a repair install. This will keep your data intact, just repair your windows files.

Just went to do this after backing up the drive in my computer. After booting from the cd it then tells me windows installation can't find the hard disk.

The hard disk was fine while copying over files in my pc, and when initially booting the laptop it finds it fine.
It's only 4 months old.

Anything else I can try?

Looks like it's actually a hardware fault.
Ran the dell diagnostics and it's returned an error on the hard disk

Error 2000-0142

Should be replaced under warranty :)

Is the hdd detected in the bios? have you tried any live cds that have hdd error software, or maybe even go to manufactures site and see if you can burn the software to disc. Or you might be able to do an error check when its connected to you pc?

EDIT, didnt see your post above, wasn't there when I went to reply.
