Hi

I purchased an OEM copy of Windows XP Pro 64bit for superPI testing purposes (linky) and never activated as it was a short term thing. Now I am rebuilding a s939 xfire rig and wondering about the merits of installing the 64bit version of windows.

It will be used as my everyday PC and will also have video/photo tasks and some gaming. Is driver support such that this should be a hastle free process or is it a nightmare still. Maybe a dual boot with normal XP would be best or windows 2000 which I have a copy of.

Just check to see if their are drivers for your camera/printer/scanner etc before you install and you should be fine. The only issue I've had is a lack of Canon drivers for my Ixus digital camera, but the built in XP stuff just about does the job.

Well seen as you have brought it, it seems a waste to not use it. Althought i would do a dual boot with windows xp normal. That way if you think its no good, its a matter of a quick zap in the right direction and its gone!

I had poor performance from x64 compared to x86, lots of people said thiers was faster than 32bit but had a prob with fatal exceptions within 1 min of bootup so gave up before i could find out if it just needed tweaking. I think they were due to display driver but who knows.
