Get faster internet?

My XP64 PCs typically require 200MB of updates on a fresh install... Takes me about 10 minutes to update.

Good for you, but how is this a solution? Maybe the OP can't simply "get faster internet" due to various factors.

To the OP: Service Pack 3 will be out soon - slipstream this onto your current install disc and it will cut the amount of updating going on after you've installed, and things like IE7 and Windows Media Player can be downloaded separately anyway.

Another option is to get it set up how you want and then image the drive so you can restore the whole lot quickly. Why do you format so much?

the op never said anything about dozens of computers...

I would agree with Caged, and image up your install after all the updates, perhaps wait till sp3. when that comes out, format your comp again, image up your partition, and save to a dvd or the like, then when you have trouble again, just wipe hd and put back on image.

the updates are about 120mb from sp2, and things like .net & media player are about another 80mb

good idea is to make a backup image of a fresh install with all the updates applied, drive image xml can do this

sp3 will be out in a few weeks/months

Making an image helps.

However I would wait until Service Pack 3 comes out and then slipstream with your original disk. Or you could use nlite.
