Hey guys,

I recommissioned a fairly old xp machine last night for a family friend and ran windows update as a matter of course. It only had about 15 updates to install which it did and that was that, I installed them and shut down.

I booted up this morning for a few last checks and I noticed the little yellow shield in the system tray notifying me of updates... it was for a security update for .net framework 1.1 and it had failed to install on the last attempt :(

Thing is, I checked and I have .net 4.0 installed so there probably isn't any reason for a security update for 1.1 to be installed is there? I've hidden the update for now because I don't want the users to keep trying to install it!

Any ideas?

All of the .NET frameworks are completely independent of each other, and therefore you will have updates for each version.

Therefore... you'll want to allow it to install. After a fresh install it will take a few runs through of Windows Update to get fully up to date, as it won't find some hotfixes until you've installed a previous one.

Then I have a problem... I've tried installing it at least twice after it failed the first time, should I just keep trying?

I was hoping there was a simple fix or something :)

MS have made one hell of a mess with their .NET installers, they should treat it like the DX setup imo. Force everyone to have all the files.

But then the DX installer is pretty awful too :D
