Hiya All,

Is anyone able to assist, the in laws laptop has stopped working.

He turns it on the dell splash screen appears, then the screen blanks out and just has the white flashing curser.

I have put the XP install disk, run recovery consol.

I have run a chkdsk /r /p to no joy, it did say it fixed errors.

I then run the fixmbr and fixboot to no avail.

Ive run ubutu on the machine and able to get into the harddrive ok. So i know the disk is working,

Does anyone have any other ideas please.

It is a Dell Laptop, with a new 250GB Western Digital Hard drive.

Many thanks in advance.

Sounds like a corrupt install of windows - what where they doing before it died?
Can you get into the BIOS and detect the harddrive ok?
Can you take the hard drive out of the laptop?
If yes, do that and plug into a caddy or adaptor and get all the data needed off it.
Format it with a few passes and install windows... If windows goes on you're good to go... If it doesn't - the hard drive is knackered.

Hiya Guys, many thanks for the reply.

Im not too what happned excatly when the laptop stopped but the inlaw was on holiday with it, what he explained to me that the pc was in screen saver mode, blank screen, and instead of touching the pad to wake up the laptop, he accidently hit the power button, from there on the laptop will not load.

I have a 2.5 enclosure, i am able to mount it all ok to my laptop and see all the files.

When the Harddrive is in the laptop the Bios sees it all ok.

I actually thought it could be the boot file corrupted, but was wondering of there was anything else i could do already to what i have done.

I think ill back up all the files from the Harddrive and reinstall windows again. Oh also i forgot to mention i tried repairing windows from the cd to no avail.

Many thanks again for your help guys

Andy
