Hey

Im building a new build and planning to reuse my HDD within it. Problem is, buying a new windows is out of my budget at the moment, so id Like to simply carry the Vista i got now onto the new build (Diff motherboard)

Is there anyway to keep my windows ?

Did you not get a Vista install disk with you last PC?

As a side note, Wndows 7 is excellent and better that Vista in every way I can see. The retail copy of 7 us well worth the outlay as you can keep it between builds. Maybe but it first and continue saving for other bits?

By this I assume you mean buying a new licence to use Windows?

Is your current system a self build? If so did u purchase an OEM or Retail copy of Vista? Your COA (The sticker on your PC case) should say.

If you're using a retail copy of Windows Vista, yes! Your licence allows you to transfer the licence to a new system. If your OEM than no, the licence dies with the motherboard.

My opinion: If you can't afford £90 for a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit you cannot afford to buy a new system.

Didnt get a CD.

And I know its better, I just cannot buy it. Ive got all the other bits for the PC ready, now only win is just an issue.

And uhm... well, I bought the PC, all I had to do is to power it on and when I switched it on, I could simply install Vista. Didnt need disc or anything, its like it was already inside.

Edit: Just checked sticker, OEMAct HP or something.

The current PC was bought from a local shop.

And I already bought new stuff for the system. Trust me, ive got other things to spend money on than spend another 90 quid on a Windows, although if it has to be done then it has to be done. Im just asking for a alternative way

Not sure what OEM is..

Look for a sticker on your PC case. If you search for Windows COA in google images you should see what kind of sticker to look out for.

I'm wondering whether the version installed is a pirate copy...

Like others have said, if its OEM (which it looks like it is) then the Windows Licence dies with that PC. If you had Retail Windows then you could use it again (as long as its on one PC at anyone time).

How can it be a pirate copy when I bought it from a retail shop ?

Like i said, found the sticker, OEMact HP

Yep it's an OEM version, in which case you're required to purchase a new licence. Windows 7 Home Premium retail is only around £90 and the licence can be transferred :).

When you said you bought it from a shop I was picturing a small independent one. Experience tells me a lot of people get bitten by these kind of shops because they install pirate copies.

Aye - it's what all software pirates/thieves say.
"I've got better things to spend my money on".

Heck I've got better things to spend my money on than a TV License, Car Tax, Car Insurance, NI Contributions.
But at the end of the day we all have bills we have to pay.

What you've done is moved an OEM license from one machine to another.
This goes against the OEM license agreement.
What you currently have installed on your machine is no more legal than a copy of the OS you could have downloaded off the internet.

Either you want to be legal or you don't.
You obviously don't want to be - so go and download a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate - it'll be no more illegal than your current installation.

Lol don't know if the banner rotates but OP click on the OCUK banner at the top right of this tread :) you know what you must do. For something you use so often, Windows 7 is cheap

Umm... Stoofa, Quit smoking w/e you are :D

I havent done anything yet, reading carefully helps yknow ;)

Edit: Hang on, so IF I did move the HDD to the other motherboard, even though the Windows is OEM, Will it still work but just be considered illegal? If so, why wont microsoft do something to prevent that ? I dont get it.
Anyhow, looks like ill have to buy a new win.

Why do people who build new systems not think about the software they will need? The £100s or even £1000s you spend on the hardware is utterly wasted without the OS to run it. £90 is cheap.

It is 24 pence a day if you use it for a year. You have probably spent more on beer/takeaways in the last few weeks than you will spend on the OS! :p

Moving the hard drive will not work anyway. There is a small chance of it working but only if they 2 PCs were using basically the same hardware which they will not be.

Yes you need to buy a new copy.

Dont pull all independent shops down 98% of all shops i know (pc repair shops sell XP vista and win 7 above board )

Yes you need to buy a new copy.

If both are Intel or AMD there is a good chance it would work, though the possibility of weirdness is massive! :p
