So driving back from Herefordshire today and I hear that dreaded sound and lo and behold, there's a chip about 4mm or so in diameter on the passenger side.

These Autoglass repairs with that gel stuff, what's the best way of getting that done? Do I ring my insurance and get them to arrange it, or call Autoglass direct? Which would be the cheapest option and also would it affect my premium at all? Probably a silly question but I don't trust all these adverts on the TV.

Always wondered with these, do you need to declare that you had your insurance pay for a chip repair when you get an insurance quote with a different company?

Your insurance company will normally have a windscreen chip helpline to call, they prefer this than you going directly to autoglass etc as they can have deals with certain companies. It shouldn't effect your renewal at all, im sure in mine there's a bit in the t&c's that explains windscreen chips don't effect anything but other glass forming parts of the body do etc.

Its almost alwyas free for chips but It'll cost you if your screen needs replacing, usually about 70 nowadays. I've claimed several times over the years for chips and 2 new windscreens and never had an issue

Thanks. I'll dig out my policy documents and see what it says and then call the windscreen number. I'm no expert, but I think it can be repaired.

If i remember correctly, Autoglass won't fix it if it's so small. But you should be fine with 4mm. Check on their website to confirm first IMO.

If you call Autoglass to arrange a repair, they'll check with your insurer to make sure that they will pay, most mainstream insurers are usually ok with Autoglass, but some smaller ones are not and you'll need to go through them. As far as I'm aware, chip repair, or windscreen replace doesn't need to be declared.

I called Groupama on their windscreen number and they went through some questions. Criteria was that it's more than 6 inches from the edge and can be covered by a £2 coin so they can repair it. Just waiting on a fix date/time now.
