Right the missus has been an idiot and we know that so can we not have any posts saying so :p :D

She has 2 cracks in her windscreen in line of sight and her mot is next week. Basically on her policy she has to pay £300 for a new screen and lose her ncd because she was naeive and didn't read the smallprint. Thing is her insurance runs out in 2 months and she wants to trade the car in but she can't if its going to fail the mot!

What I want to know is if we get the chips repaired is it still goin to fail the mot?

Car is only worth 1k annoyingly

Cheers

I had a crack in my windscreen on my first car. Excess was high, windscreens weren't covered under certain age etc etc. I got a front screen fitted (Skoda Fabia) for £120 - try ringing people from yellow pages.

£300 isn't to bad a windscreen can cost £800

I have only actually had to buy one windscreen, and that was for a 1998 Mk3 Rover 200. But out of insurance the screen fitted was about £120 (as somebody else has quoted above for their Fabia). People in the states seem to quote about $500 fitted including shipping from europe when they have their Mercedes S-Class screens replaced, and those are massive UV coated rain sensor affairs, not seen a UK quote but i bet it wont be much different.

Unless you drive a scania lorry, or the QM2, i doubt the screen will cost £300 let alone £800!

Ford heated windscreens cost nothing like £600, whoever quoted you that was lieing to you. Prices banded around google appear to be around £140 for the heated models. I have actually out of boredem (and because i do not have glass cover on any of my policies) just had a phone quote of £101 fitted for a non heated screen for a ford focus mk1.5

The car in the OP is worth £1000 and is going to be sold soon, it likely will not need anything exotic. The cheapest screen will more than suffice.

Im not going to get into this but i should know what windscreen i had fitted and what was involved and why it was a lot,I worked in the ford showroom for many years.

End of

Its not the end of, as you are either wrong, or you are possibly ignoring other brands of windscreen's if perhaps the cheaper ones are not genuine.

heated front Focus ST screen is about £500, I know cos I insisted my insurance company fitted a Ford one and not some cheapy autoglass one, and saw the invoice all I paid was £75

Companies like Autoglass etc used by insurance companies have massively inflated prices, that's why yours was £600.

No way would it have been £600 from a small local fitter, Autoglass wanted £550 for one for my old Rover 400, I got a quote of £110 from a local guy.
