Can anyone recommend a decent windscreen repair place in Nottingham or Derby?

Just been to fetch my gf from work when I was overtaken by a taxi doing what looked like double the speed limit. Just after he passed me something flew out of his drivers window and went straight into my windscreen, leaving a nice 10p sized spiderweb crack

I didn't think windscreen claims affected your NCB?

Repairs don't, replacements do afaik

This is it with a 20p as reference, not quite as big as I'd first thought but I'm still ****** off about it. Wish I'd been able to get the taxi's plate :(

you don't need a replacement screen for that, looks like a stone chip
someone like autoglass will fix that no problem

I'm sure you're wrong regarding the no claims being affected if you have a windscreen replaced stuff...

Replacement windscreen and glass cover if you use one of our approved repairers.

Claims under this section will not affect your No Claims Discount

Unlimited, but subject to policy excesses; repair £10, replacement £75

I guess it does depend on the insurance company involved but I'm sure this is pretty standard practice if you're fully comp.

My windscreen needs replacing, it's still the original one that came with the car and it's got three chips plus pitting (just age I guess). When I get some time to spare I'll get it replaced.

IIRC it has to be smaller than 10mm, else it can't be repaired anyway.

One of my colleagues had a big stone put a big chip in his windscreen causing it to be a MOT failure, as it was larger than 10mm across. He had to have a new screen fitted as a result.

/edit

If the chip is in the drivers' line of sight and over 10mm, then it's an MOT fail. Not sure what the maximum repairable chip is.

I heard someone mention once that getting a windscreen replaced could compromise the structural integrity of the part of the body in that area... is this a load of old tosh?

Obviously you wouldn't want to drive around with no windscreen, but surely if the job's done properly it'd be just as strong as it was from the factory. After all, the windscreen and other glass is installed after the rest of the car is made, isn't it?

The windscreen in place does provide structural integrity to the car.

If you are getting it repaired, book it in quick. The repair relies on the chip not getting filled with crap otherwise the resin they insert will not "take".

I left it too long and now i need a new windscreen.

Yeah do it asap before it continues to crack.

My dad's windscreen was full of small chips until a large one came along and while he again didn't do anything, it made a crack across half his screen. The car had just passed MOT but it had to be replaced for next mot ( till then he drove on with the crack, although he did put on transparent tape on it lol as a safety precaution ).

I managed to smash my own windscreen with my head this week (very stupid story) I got the windscreen replaced via the insurance company for £60 (direct line make up the rest) they came and did it at my home 2 days after I smashed it, and it does not affect my NCB.
You have to go with the company the insurance company tells you to (mine was autoglass) and then it doesnt affect your policy or cost you any more.

Went down to the car this morning to pop it down the road to Halfords to get AutoGlass to fix it. Cracked 1/3 the way across the screen.

Admiral have given me free windscreen cover, so someone from AutoGlass is going to be ringing me tomorrow to sort out a replacement. £70 excess and won't count as a claim, which is better than I thought but I'm now without a car until it's sorted. Damn :(
